We take a structural approach to examine the effects of larger container size on consumption of carbonated soft drinks---using Nielsen Company's Homescan data on household purchases for the years 2004 through 2006. Our results show that by removing the price discount implicit in packages with larger container size, the average unit price the two households pay for CSD products increase and hence both households (both the low income and the high income) reduce their annual consumption of soft drinks by about 75%. This reduction is due to a combination of reduced number of purchases and switching to products with less number of bottles/cans. |

A consumer life-cycle demand system is built to investigate the presence of rational habits and the effects of food safety information on U.S. meat consumption. Information extracted from the popular press coverage of food safety events is used to approximate consumers' "true" perception of food safety. At quarterly frequencies, U.S. meat demand is found to be intertemporally nonseparable. During the post-1998 period, habit persistence is found to dominate inventory adjustment in beef demand. We examine the effects of domestic advertising and promotion expenditures on meat demand, extending previous efforts in several areas, including the use of more recent data, employing a complete demand system and simultaneously measuring the impacts of generic pork and beef advertising and food safety information on the demand for beef, pork, and poultry. Using the Generalized Almost Ideal Demand System (GAIDS), own- and cross- beef and pork advertising and own- and cross- beef, pork, and poultry food safety effects are measured jointly and consistently. Food manufacturers have an incentive to include nutrient content claims, health claims, or other types of labeling statements on foods if they believe that consumers will be willing to pay more for products with specific attributes. We estimated semi-log hedonic price regressions for five breakfast bar and cereal product categories using Nielsen ScanTrack scanner data for 2004 and found that labeling statements for these foods are often associated with substantial increases in consumer willingness to pay. The largest effects were associated with “carb-conscious” carbohydrate labeling (reflecting the time period of the data), followed by fat and sugar content labeling statements. |
